Sonsation is a mid-season June-bearing variety that produces delicious, firm strawberries. If there was a perfect strawberry, Sonsation would certainly be in the running for the title. Just look at its perfect strawberry gloss and ease of picking for growers.

Cultivation

Sonsation is an easy-growing variety with strong root development, which produces a compact plant with upturned leaves. Side crowns are created easily.
The flower trusses are well protected against late frosts. The high quality of the flower pollen explains Sonsation’s good fruit set. Separating trusses is easier compared to Sonata. From flowering onwards, the plant requires more potassium.
The fruits are clearly visible, so easy to pick. Sonsation appears to be tolerant to Phytophthora cactorum, but preventive treatment is recommended.
In the field, this variety has also revealed high tolerance to mildew. Sonsation requires extra magnesium in its feeding programme. The variety is also suitable for early heated cultivation.
Given the risk of Mucor, the plants shouldn’t be planted too close to each other.

Harvest and retail

Sonsation’s fruits are very similar to those of Sonata. They are orange-red in colour, cone-shaped, and glossy, even under difficult conditions. The flavour is excellent. No surprise then, that Sonsation is becoming more commonly available on retailer's shelves.
The first fruits may be grooved. The firmness is slightly better than that of Sonata.
This firmness, in combination with the pleasant juiciness, ensures that the fruit quality is excellent. Sonsation is suitable for both direct sales, and sale at local supermarkets.

To be clear: Sonsation makes everyone happy, both strawberry lovers and growers alike, even more so if Sonsation plants are sourced from Kemp BV - they give just that little bit extra…
